NICKEL DISTRICT CONSERVATION AUTHORITY
Lake Laurentian Conservation Area is a scenic natural area 10 min from downtown Sudbury. The area offers 2,415 acres of protected green space. Conservation Sudbury is the conservation authority providing watershed management services to the residents of Greater Sudbury.

The Nickel District Conservation Authority (NDCA) is a Canadian nonprofit organization responsible for conservation and natural resource management in the Greater Sudbury area of Ontario. It was established in June 1973 through the amalgamation of two former conservation authorities: the Junction Creek Conservation Authority in Sudbury and the Whitson Valley Conservation Authority in Valley East.
Jurisdiction and Area
NDCA's watershed jurisdiction covers approximately 7,576 square kilometres, focusing primarily on the Wanapitei River, Vermilion River, and Whitefish River watersheds. The authority’s domain expands to 9,150 square kilometres when including the Greater Sudbury Source Protection Area under the Clean Water Act, 2006.
Mandate and Activities
The authority manages the conservation, restoration, development, and protection of natural resources and green spaces within its jurisdiction. A significant area under its care is the Lake Laurentian Conservation Area in Sudbury, which encompasses around 950 hectares preserved for public enjoyment and to protect municipal water sources such as Lake Ramsey.
NDCA’s programs aim to ensure excellent water quantity and quality, reduce flood risk, maintain diverse natural habitats, and prepare for environmental emergencies. It operates under the principles of local initiative, cost sharing, and watershed-based jurisdiction, working collaboratively with all levels of government, community groups, and residents to support sustainable watershed health.
Governance
The organization is governed by a seven-member board appointed by the City of Greater Sudbury. This governance structure facilitates community representation and stewardship aligned with municipal priorities.
Regulatory Role
The NDCA formerly regulated development, interference with wetlands, and alterations to shorelines and watercourses under Ontario Regulation 156/06 per the Conservation Authorities Act. However, this specific regulation was revoked on April 1, 2024.
