Established in 1954, BPL has evolved to become a major educational and community resource. Today, it operates four branches, ensuring comprehensive coverage and accessibility for local residents.

BPL's Special Collections include local history materials such as Burnaby newspapers from 1926 onwards, historical photographs, local history files, high school yearbooks, fire insurance maps, street and telephone directories, and works by Burnaby authors. Additionally, there are resources on British Columbia's history, which cover subjects like urban planning, immigration, and Indigenous history.
