History

MERA was founded in 1999 to serve the hamlets of McDonalds Corners and Elphin in Ontario. Since its inception, it has evolved to become a vibrant cultural center in an area previously lacking in arts programming. Over the years, MERA has grown to host approximately 250 events annually, attracting participants from nearby cities like Ottawa and Kingston[4].

MERA's mission is to encourage, develop, and organize arts, cultural, and recreational activities for people of all ages. This includes promoting well-being, health, and community connectivity by facilitating activities that bring the rural community together. • Weaving and Textiles: MERA has a dedicated Weaving Studio with seven looms, inspired by the textile traditions of local Scottish settlers. The studio was fully renovated with support from the Perth and District Community Foundation, allowing year-round use with reduced heating costs[1][4].
• Pottery: The Pottery Collective operates a fully equipped studio built by volunteers in the MERA Schoolhouse basement. The studio has become increasingly popular, reflecting the community's interest in ceramics[4].
• Music: MERA hosts intimate concerts on Sunday afternoons, showcasing local and visiting talent. Despite the small venue, these events often sell out due to their popularity[4].

Governance

MERA is governed by a board of volunteer directors elected from its members. It operates as a not-for-profit corporation incorporated by Letters Patent in the Province of Ontario[1][2].

Facilities

The organization is based in a renovated 1860s schoolhouse, which serves as a community center and is owned by the Corporation of the Township of Lanark Highlands. The property is leased to MERA for its activities[1][5].
