Youth Parliament of British Columbia Alumni Society
The Youth Parliament of British Columbia Alumni Society, registered with the Canada Revenue Agency under the business number 119307692RR0001, serves as the sponsoring organization for the British Columbia Youth Parliament (BCYP). The Society is committed to promoting and supporting the BCYP by fostering cooperative youth movements and educating members in parliamentary processes and responsibilities of citizenship.
History and Structure
The Alumni Society was formed during the reorganization of the BC Youth Parliament in 1974. It functions as a Senate for the BCYP, ensuring an annual session is conducted, reviewing legislation passed by the Youth Parliament, and assisting with community service projects when needed. The Society is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, composed of former Youth Parliament members who provide guidance and mentorship to current BCYP participants.
Membership
Membership in the Youth Parliament of BC Alumni Society is available to anyone who has been a member of the BCYP or the Older Boys' Parliament of British Columbia. Additionally, alumni from other youth parliaments residing in British Columbia may also be entitled to membership.
Mission
The Society's mission focuses on perpetuating and promoting the BC Youth Parliament by bringing together youth representatives from across British Columbia. This is achieved by stimulating cooperative methods to enhance youth movements, educating members about parliamentary processes, and instilling a sense of citizenship responsibilities.
Relationship with British Columbia Youth Parliament
The Youth Parliament of British Columbia, supported by the Alumni Society, is a youth-run organization dedicated to promoting community service. It selects approximately 97 youth aged 16 to 21 annually to participate in debates and community projects. Notable projects include Camp Phoenix, a summer camp for disadvantaged children, and various fundraising activities.
Community Impact
Through its partnership with the BCYP, the Alumni Society plays a crucial role in fostering youth involvement in community service. Members of the BCYP undertake significant volunteer work throughout the year and organize large group projects. This focus on service aligns with the motto "Youth Serving Youth" and reflects a commitment to positive social change.
