Memorial University began its educational journey with an initial enrollment of 57 students in non-degree programs. The college was set up on Parade Street in St. John's with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. In 1933, MUC merged with the adjacent Normal School, taking on teacher training responsibilities.

By the 1940s, enrollment had significantly increased to over 400 students. In 1949, the institution became a degree-granting university, marking a pivotal moment in its history. The university relocated to its current Elizabeth Avenue campus in 1961, which further expanded its capacity and offerings. This period also saw the introduction of doctoral degrees in subjects like English and Chemistry by 1965.

The Labrador Institute, based in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, became the Labrador Campus in 2022, offering specialized programs focused on Arctic and Subarctic studies. The School of Arctic and Subarctic Studies (SASS) offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in these areas.
