The Woman Abuse Council of Toronto (WomanACT)
The Woman Abuse Council of Toronto, commonly known as WomanACT, is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating violence against women and advancing gender equity through community mobilization, coordination, research, policy development, and public education. Established in 1991, WomanACT operates primarily in Toronto and serves as a collaborative coalition of organizations and individuals committed to addressing and responding effectively to woman abuse.
History
WomanACT was originally created in 1991 under the name Metro Woman Abuse Protocol Project by the office of the Chairman of Metropolitan Toronto. For its first eight years, it functioned as a community-based coalition under the trusteeship of Jewish Family and Children’s Services. In 1999, the organization adopted the name Woman Abuse Council of Toronto and became incorporated as an independent nonprofit entity. In January 2010, it additionally adopted the official abbreviation “WomanACT” and obtained charitable status as recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency[4].
Mission and Activities
WomanACT’s mission is to eradicate violence against women by fostering coordinated community responses and promoting systemic change. The organization provides leadership for cross-sectoral groups, conducts research and policy analysis, and engages in public education to raise awareness about gender-based violence. WomanACT emphasizes that ending violence against women and promoting gender equity is a collective responsibility requiring collaboration among diverse stakeholders[2][4].
In addition to community mobilization and policy work, WomanACT has developed innovative projects such as a social enterprise offering organizational consulting services to prevent and respond to workplace violence. This initiative includes workplace audits, training, policy reviews, and organizational development aimed at improving workplace culture and safety. The enterprise targets corporate clients, institutions, businesses, and nonprofits, with a focus on tailored solutions to address the root causes of workplace violence[3].
Organizational Structure
WomanACT is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency (Business Number 872766878RR0001). It operates with a membership that includes both organizations and individuals invested in creating effective community responses to violence against women across Toronto. The organization functions as a policy development and planning body with a commitment to improving the overall effectiveness of services and supports available to victims of woman abuse[2][5].
Impact and Vision
WomanACT is recognized for its leadership in mobilizing community efforts and advancing bold solutions to gender-based violence. By bringing together stakeholders, generating evidence-based research, and building capacity, the organization works toward systemic transformations that promote safety, equity, and justice for women. Its efforts contribute to shaping informed policies and collaborative practices to address the complex dynamics of intimate partner violence and other forms of abuse against women[1][4].
