Chilliwack Search and Rescue Society
The Chilliwack Search and Rescue Society (CHILLIWACK SAR) is a Canadian nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to providing search and rescue services within and around the Chilliwack region of British Columbia. Registered under the Business Number 891962169RR0001, the organization operates primarily to assist individuals who become lost, injured, or otherwise in distress in the diverse and often challenging terrain encompassing urban, rural, mountainous, swift water, and wilderness areas.
Operations and Mandate
Serving an area of approximately 1,100 square kilometers, CHILLIWACK SAR's jurisdiction extends from the Vedder Canal to Chilliwack Lake, from the United States border north to the Fraser River. The organization is tasked with responding to more than 75 emergencies annually, providing critical support in search and rescue missions involving hikers, mountaineers, mountain bikers, climbers, campers, backcountry skiers, snowshoers, ATV riders, hunters, fishers, kayakers, rafters, sailors, swimmers, and air sports enthusiasts such as hang gliding and paragliding. These activities take place across the North Cascade Mountains, Fraser and Chilliwack Rivers, Cultus and Chilliwack Lakes, and surrounding airspace.
As a volunteer corps, CHILLIWACK SAR collaborates closely with multiple agencies, operating under the direction of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Provincial Emergency Program, Emergency Health Services, and the Coroner's Service. It also coordinates efforts with the Chilliwack Fire Department. The team responds to varied emergency scenarios including search and rescue in hazardous terrain, swift-water rescues, rope rescues, helicopter long line extractions, avalanche responses, mountain rescues, and urban search operations. Additionally, on a volunteer basis and at the request of the Provincial Coroners Service, members assist with technical recoveries such as plane crashes, drownings, cliff recoveries, and train-related incidents.
Membership and Training
CHILLIWACK SAR consists of approximately 35 highly skilled volunteers who undergo a rigorous recruitment and training program. Members commit to over 300 volunteer hours annually, including weekly training sessions to maintain proficiency across multiple disciplines necessary for operational readiness. This multidisciplinary approach ensures the team remains capable of addressing the broad spectrum of rescue scenarios encountered within their operational landscape.
Community Role
Relying heavily on community support, CHILLIWACK SAR plays an essential role in enhancing safety for the millions of people who engage in outdoor recreation in the Chilliwack area. Their presence and readiness contribute significantly to emergency response capabilities in the region, exemplifying strong volunteer spirit and dedication to public service.
