Forest City Gallery
The Forest City Gallery (FCG), legally registered as 891704249RR0001, is a Canadian nonprofit artist-run centre established in 1973 in London, Ontario. Founded by a collective of nationally recognized artists and musicians, it played a pivotal role in shaping Canada’s artist-run culture, contributing to the creation of national organizations such as the Artist-Run Centres and Collectives of Ontario (ARCCO) and Canadian Artists’ Representation/Le Front des artistes canadiens (CARFAC)[3].
History
FCG emerged as one of Canada’s earliest artist-initiated galleries, prioritizing artistic autonomy and professionalization through fair compensation practices aligned with CARFAC standards[3][5]. Over its five-decade history, it has maintained a commitment to experimental and contemporary programming, adapting to challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic by transitioning to virtual exhibitions and events[5].
Mandate and Operations
FCG operates as a noncommercial space focused on fostering dialogue within local, regional, and international arts communities[1]. Its 2,600-square-foot facility supports multidisciplinary artists at all career stages, with an emphasis on emerging practitioners[3]. The gallery offers exhibitions, workshops, residencies, and community outreach programs while providing skills training for artists and administrators[3][5].
Programming and Impact
As the only artist-run centre between Windsor and Hamilton, FCG serves over 439,000 residents in London-Middlesex[3]. It hosts artist talks, performances, and collaborative projects, including neighborhood park initiatives and live music series[3][5]. The gallery also administers a membership system, granting access to exclusive events and an annual Members’ Show[5].
Governance
FCG sustains operations through government grants, sponsorships, donations, and membership fees[5]. Its governing structure reflects its artist-run ethos, emphasizing community engagement and adaptive responses to shifts in arts funding and accessibility[1][3].

Join us for an interactive workshop led by Ruth Skinner that explores what effective artwork documentation is, where it lives, and how we can use the technologies and locations available to us in creative ways. 📷✨ Participants will be introduced to the basics of photography (focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO) and ad hoc lighting situations. Additionally, the gallery and surrounding area outside will be used to practice documenting works.
