Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society

The Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (CWRS) is a Canadian nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned wildlife. Founded in 1993, CWRS was established in response to the growing need in Calgary and its surrounding areas for professional wildlife care and rehabilitation services. The organization provides expert and compassionate care to a wide range of native wildlife affected by urban hazards such as vehicle collisions, pet attacks, barbed wire entanglements, electrocution, and exposure to harmful substances[1][3][5].

History and Purpose
Before the establishment of CWRS, wildlife injured in the Calgary region were accepted and treated by the Calgary Zoo and local veterinary clinics. However, the increasing number of wildlife requiring medical attention made clear the need for a dedicated long-term rehabilitation facility. CWRS was thus created to fill this gap, combining veterinary treatment with extended care and recovery in a specialized environment. The Society is accredited by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association and works closely with Sustainable Resource Development to ensure proper wildlife management and care[3].

Operations
CWRS receives between 1,600 and 3,000 injured and orphaned animals annually and responds to over 8,000 wildlife-related public calls each year. Animals are brought to the facility by volunteers, members of the public, Calgary 311 services, or local veterinary clinics. Upon arrival, trained wildlife technicians and certified wildlife rehabilitators assess and treat the animals under the supervision of a staff veterinarian. Animals remain at the facility until deemed fit for release, at which point they are returned to their natural habitats or held until appropriate conditions for migratory species exist[1][3][5].

The Society does not charge for its services, operating as a registered charitable organization reliant on donations and support from individuals and businesses. Its work embodies the three R’s of wildlife management: rescue, rehabilitate, and release[1][3][5].

Education and Community Outreach
In addition to its rehabilitation efforts, Calgary Wildlife is committed to public education and outreach. The organization offers educational programs and presentations aimed at increasing awareness about local wildlife, the importance of living in harmony with urban animals, and the benefits wildlife provide to ecosystems. These efforts include outreach to schools and community groups as well as providing resources on how to appropriately interact with wildlife, when to intervene, and when to let nature take its course[1][3].

Impact
The Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society plays a vital role in the Calgary region by providing expert, compassionate care to wildlife and fostering a better understanding between humans and native animals. Its ongoing expansion plans aim to increase capacity to help more wildlife in need and strengthen community engagement in wildlife conservation[3][4].
