Douglas Coldwell Layton Foundation

The Douglas Coldwell Layton Foundation (formerly the Douglas–Coldwell Foundation) is a Canadian nonprofit organization committed to promoting social democracy and education. The organization was established in November 1971 with Tommy Douglas as its founding president. In January 2022, it was renamed to include Jack Layton as a founder.

History

The foundation was initially established by Tommy Douglas, who envisioned a platform to provoke discussions and keep social movements active and progressive. The organization was strengthened in 1987 through a merger with J.S. Woodsworth's Woodsworth Memorial Foundation.

Mission

The foundation's mission is to promote the principles of social democracy by reclaiming the legacies of its founders and other influential social democratic thinkers, writers, and leaders. It contributes to public policy dialogue by provoking discussion through research and education. The goal is to advance Tommy Douglas's vision for a Canada where no person is left behind.

Activities

The foundation engages in various research and educational programs aimed at teaching Canadians about the legacies of its founders and their contributions to Canadian society. It aspires to support future generations by fostering important conversations in Canada.

Legal Status

The Douglas Coldwell Layton Foundation is a registered charity in Canada with a charitable number issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). All donations are tax-receipted, supporting the organization's charitable objectives.

Relevance

As a left-wing think tank, the Douglas Coldwell Layton Foundation plays a significant role in promoting socialist education and fostering discussions on social democracy in Canada.
