Hamilton Sustainable Victory Gardens Inc.

Hamilton Sustainable Victory Gardens Inc. was a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating hunger and food insecurity through urban agriculture in Hamilton, Ontario. Established with the mission of transforming vacant city lots into productive community gardens, the organization provided fresh produce to local food banks and meal programs, promoting community engagement, education, and sustainability.

History and Mission

Founded in 2011, Hamilton Sustainable Victory Gardens focused on combating food insecurity in the Hamilton area by harnessing the power of urban gardening. The organization mobilized community volunteers to cultivate fresh fruits and vegetables on underutilized land, turning these spaces into hubs of growth and learning. Their work was grounded in the philosophy that hunger is not a matter of charity but a matter of justice, reflecting a strong social justice ethic in their approach to food security.

Activities and Impact

Hamilton Victory Gardens collaborated with local partners to involve a diverse range of community members in urban agriculture initiatives. These efforts included:

  • Establishing community gardens on empty city lots.
  • Providing fresh produce to local food banks and meal programs.
  • Offering educational programs about gardening and sustainable food systems.
  • Building community through shared agricultural activities.

The gardens served not only as sources of food but also as places of community gathering and environmental education, contributing to the overall well-being of the Hamilton community.

Governance

The organization was led by a Board of Directors with extensive experience in both nonprofit management and global health. Notable members included:

  • Mark Tennant, Chair of the Board, who brought over 30 years of business and nonprofit management experience, and managed The Good Shepherd Venture Centre food bank.
  • Sarah Hopen, Board Treasurer.
  • Dr. Sadequa Shahrook, Board Director, a global health policy researcher with expertise in nutrition epidemiology and health systems research.
  • Allison Williams, Board Director, engaged in community development and gardening activities.
Dissolution

After more than a decade of service to the Hamilton community, the Board of Directors announced the dissolution of Hamilton Sustainable Victory Gardens effective December 31, 2024. The decision marked the end of the organization's active contributions but acknowledged longstanding partnerships and the impact made in reducing food insecurity and cultivating community spirit throughout its existence.

Hamilton Sustainable Victory Gardens Inc. remains recognized for its significant role in addressing hunger through innovative urban agriculture and community collaboration in Hamilton, Ontario, from 2011 until its closure in 2024.
