VANCOUVER HOMEWORK CLUB SOCIETY

Vancouver Homework Club Society

The Vancouver Homework Club Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization founded in 2001 that provides academic, social, and developmental support to elementary and high school students in East Vancouver. The society operates primarily at Britannia Secondary School, serving students from some of Vancouver’s most vulnerable neighborhoods, including the Downtown Eastside, Strathcona, and Grandview-Woodlands.

Mission and Programs

The society’s mission is to support students by offering qualified tutoring, a supervised and welcoming study environment, and active advocacy both in and out of school. It aims to enhance academic success and personal development for students facing educational and social challenges.

Academic Support:

  • Free tutoring is provided in a variety of subjects such as Sciences, Humanities, and Modern Languages.
  • The club hosts seminars on study habits, essay writing, and provincial exam preparation.
  • Over 50 tutors contribute from local universities like the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, as well as from the community.

Social and Advocacy Support:

  • The club offers a safe and comfortable space for students to connect with peers and supportive adults.
  • Mentorship is provided in life skills, career planning, and post-secondary education opportunities.
  • The society also supports students in problem-solving within the school environment and the broader community.

Financial Assistance:

  • The Vancouver Homework Club Society provides bursaries and scholarships to assist students continuing to post-secondary education who might not otherwise qualify for financial aid.
  • This financial support addresses the common issue of financial stress hindering vulnerable students’ academic progression.
Community Context and Impact

Britannia Secondary School, where the club operates, enrolls a large proportion of students from low-income and at-risk backgrounds, with approximately 30% designated as having special needs. Many students come from families unable to provide adequate academic or emotional support at home. The Homework Club caters to these needs by fostering both academic tutoring and social development, helping students succeed in school and beyond.

Indigenous Acknowledgment

In the spirit of reconciliation, the Vancouver Homework Club Society respectfully acknowledges that it works on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ / sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
