The Juno Beach Centre Association is a Canadian nonprofit charitable organization that owns and operates the Juno Beach Centre, a museum and cultural center dedicated to commemorating Canada's role in the Second World War. The Association is governed by a Board of Directors based in Burlington, Ontario, Canada.
Purpose and Mission
The core purpose of the Juno Beach Centre Association (JBCA) is to serve as a tangible and fitting memorial to Canada's participation in the Second World War and to recognize the emergence of Canada on the international stage. The Association is dedicated to remembering and commemorating the sacrifices made by Canadians who contributed to the Allied victory in all theatres of the war and on the home front. Moreover, the JBCA emphasizes education, aiming to teach adults and children—both today and in future generations—about Canada's vital role in preserving the freedoms enjoyed today.[1][5]
Juno Beach Centre
The Juno Beach Centre, located in Courseulles-sur-Mer on the Normandy coast of France, is Canada's Second World War museum and cultural center that pays homage to approximately 45,000 Canadians who lost their lives during the war, including 5,500 killed during the Battle of Normandy and 381 on D-Day. Opened in 2003, the Centre was conceived and built by Second World War veterans and volunteers as a permanent memorial to all Canadians who served in the conflict. It functions as an interactive educational facility offering in-depth information about Canada’s military contributions and the broader historical context of the war.[2][5]
Historical Background and Governance
The JBCA was founded by veterans of the Second World War, including its founder and first president, Garth Webb. The Association has managed the Centre since its inception. The Canadian government provided funding for the creation and opening of the Centre and continues to support its operations and interpretive programs.[1][5]
Activities and Programs
In addition to operating the museum, the Juno Beach Centre Association undertakes educational and commemorative activities to maintain public awareness of Canada's wartime history. For example, the JBCA launched campaigns to connect Canadians with local Second World War stories, fostering a deeper understanding of individual and collective sacrifices made during the conflict.[4]
