Collingwood Agricultural Society

The Collingwood Agricultural Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization promoting agricultural practices, production, and activities through educational efforts. It is best known for organizing and operating the annual Great Northern Exhibition (GNE), one of Canada's oldest continuous fall fairs.

History

The Great Northern Exhibition has a rich history dating back to 1855, originating from humble fall celebrations in Nottawasaga Township. Initially located in Collingwood from 1883 to 1983, the exhibition moved to its current site in Clearview Township in 1984, offering modern facilities and services.

The society's history reflects significant community developments, including surviving through major social changes, world wars, and economic depressions. A notable publication marking its 150th anniversary is "Come to the Fair," written by local author Marie Cruickshank. This historical account chronicles the GNE's journey from its early beginnings to its present-day form.

Activities and Services

In addition to the Great Northern Exhibition, the Collingwood Agricultural Society provides various services and opportunities such as onsite winter storage and event rentals. The society actively engages community members through volunteer opportunities for both students and adults.
