Bad Dog Theatre Company
The Bad Dog Theatre Company is a Canadian nonprofit improvisational theatre organization based in Toronto, Ontario. Established in 2003, the company is renowned for its diverse range of comedic improv performances, with a primary focus on short-form improv, while also embracing long-form and musical improvisation techniques.
History
The roots of the Bad Dog Theatre Company trace back to 1982 when it was originally founded as Theatresports Toronto, influenced heavily by director and playwright Keith Johnstone. The company initially presented weekly improvisational comedy shows at Harbourfront, gaining recognition for its innovative approach to improv theatre. Notable alumni from this early period include Mike Myers, Tim Sims, Bruce Hunter, and Colin Mochrie.
Throughout the 1990s, Theatresports Toronto experienced several venue relocations. In 2003, the organization rebranded as The Bad Dog Theatre Company, marking its current era. The theatre continues the legacy of improv excellence and remains a significant fixture in Toronto’s comedy scene.
Programming and Productions
The Bad Dog Theatre Company offers a variety of improv shows, including the long-running Theatresports, Harold Night (a long-form improv event), and musical improv performances such as Show Stopping Number: The Improvised Musical and Troubadour. The company has also pioneered parody improv shows in Toronto, including Hairy Patter and the Improviser's Stone, The Lord of the Things, A Twisted Christmas Carol, and Dreadwood.
Recognition and Impact
The company and its productions have earned several Canadian Comedy Award nominations. Its venue, located on Danforth Avenue in Toronto, has been twice recognized as the "Best Improv Theatre" by NOW Magazine’s annual 'Best of Toronto' awards. The Bad Dog Theatre Company remains committed to fostering a vibrant community for improvisational theatre through both performances and educational programs.
