History
The origins of the Hamilton Beach Rescue Unit go back to 1939 when it began as a volunteer Air Raid Patrol (ARP) along the shores of Lake Ontario. Over the years, it transitioned through roles, including forming the Burlington Beach Volunteer Fire Department in 1941. After the City of Hamilton annexed the beach strip in 1956, the volunteers decided to form the Hamilton Beach Rescue Unit in 1957. Initially, they used borrowed and rented boats for rescue operations.
Operations
The organization is equipped with a fleet of five vessels, two trucks, and additional support equipment. This allows them to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They can deploy their vessels via water or transport them on trailers, making them versatile in reaching various locations.
Training and Technology
Members receive extensive training certified by Transport Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard. Their vessels are equipped with the latest navigation and search technologies, ensuring they are prepared to handle complex rescue operations.
Volunteer Base
The unit is composed of approximately 30 volunteers who work closely with local authorities; they are an integral part of the community's safety and emergency response system. The organization relies on volunteer enthusiasm and commitment to maintain its operations.
