History
The Eden Mills Writers' Festival began in 1989, initiated by Leon Rooke, a local resident and Governor General's Award-winning author. The inaugural event was held outside the historic 1877 General Store, with Rooke launching his novel A Good Baby. Encouraged by Don and Mark Holman, the store’s owners, Rooke invited prominent Canadian authors such as Rohinton Mistry, Michael Ondaatje, Jane Urquhart, and Linda Spalding. The first festival attracted about 350 attendees, establishing a tradition that continues to grow.
Over the years, the festival has expanded its scope to include a greater number of professional readers, contests, and community activities. It has celebrated milestones such as its 25th anniversary in 2013 and continues to champion Canadian writing with a warm community spirit.
Community and Impact
The Eden Mills Writers' Festival is recognized as a significant cultural event in the region, fostering literary arts and Canadian ideas. It supports local and national writers, nurtures emerging talent through workshops and contests, and engages audiences with diverse literary offerings. The festival’s idyllic outdoor setting and community involvement make it a distinctive and beloved event among literary festivals in Canada.
