Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts Inc.
Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts Inc. is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and celebrating the arts in the Uxbridge region. Established in 1985, the organization has played a significant role in fostering artistic expression and cultural engagement in the community by hosting a variety of arts-related events and programs.
History
The origin of Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts dates back to a 1985 meeting at the Hobby Horse Arms pub, where owner Ron Tindley and musician Tom Baker envisioned an event that would showcase music, film, visual arts, and theatre. Their goal was to bring professional artists and their work to Uxbridge, giving local artists and art enthusiasts opportunities to experience and interact with accomplished artists in their own community.
To realize this vision, a team of local artists and art lovers was formed. Four founding artistic directors were appointed to develop programs across different art forms: Tom Baker for music, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Chapman for film, mural painter and art teacher John Richmond for visual arts, and local actress and director Roz Pritchard for theatre. Supported by local business people and numerous volunteers, the organization launched its inaugural event on August 22, 1986.
Over the years, the Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts has grown in scope and reputation, becoming a major cultural highlight in the town. It has drawn new residents inspired by the vibrant arts scene and helped cultivate lasting collaborations and community initiatives among artists and audiences alike. The festival has been instrumental in positioning Uxbridge as a town recognized for its commitment to the arts[2].
Activities and Events
The organization operates primarily from September to October, presenting an annual arts festival that includes a wide range of events such as music concerts, film screenings, visual art exhibitions, theatre productions, and workshops. Notable recurring events include:
- Uxbridge Studio Tour: A two-day event showcasing local artists' studios.
- Art On The Fringe: Parallel to the Studio Tour, this event highlights diverse forms of artistic expression.
- Books and Authors: Literary events featuring readings and discussions.
- Roxy Annual Short Film Festival: Promoting film culture in the community.
- Evening of Jazz: Concerts featuring professional jazz musicians.
Workshops, such as the Writing a Short Play Workshop, also form part of the programming, supporting artistic development and engagement among participants[1][3].
Community Impact
The Uxbridge Celebration of the Arts continues to be driven by volunteers and community involvement. Its activities have enriched the cultural landscape of Uxbridge Township, fostering artistic growth and cultural awareness. The festival has not only offered entertainment but also strengthened community ties and encouraged the establishment of new artistic initiatives and collaborations in the region.
The organization's enduring success is attributed to the dedication of its founding directors, volunteers, and the support from local businesses and residents, ensuring the continuation of a vibrant arts festival that contributes significantly to the cultural identity of Uxbridge[2][3].
