Crosswalk Safety Society of Nova Scotia
Overview
The Crosswalk Safety Society of Nova Scotia is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing pedestrian safety, particularly at crosswalks. The society focuses on education, research, and community initiatives to improve the safety environment for pedestrians.
Objectives
The organization's primary objectives include:
- Improving Crosswalk Safety: Educating the public, government officials, and police to enhance safety for pedestrians at crosswalks.
- Community Initiatives: Facilitating programs such as crosswalk flag implementations to bolster safety in communities.
History
The Crosswalk Safety Society of Nova Scotia originated from a community project, the Waverley Road Crosswalk Flags, which began in 2008-09 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Despite initial resistance from local authorities, the initiative gained provincial approval and expanded to other locations. Crosswalk flags have been installed in numerous communities across Nova Scotia and beyond, with significant support from both local governments and private funding sources.
Impact
As of recent records, the society has facilitated over 230 installations in the Halifax Regional Municipality alone and more than 130 installations in other Nova Scotia communities. Additionally, they have contributed to the setup of crosswalk flags in 12 communities across five other Canadian provinces.
Collaboration and Awareness
The society collaborates with local councils and community leaders to install crosswalk flags and promote crosswalk safety. Their efforts are part of broader initiatives to increase awareness about the shared responsibility of road safety among both drivers and pedestrians.
Future Initiatives
The organization continues to advocate for enhanced crosswalk safety measures, working closely with government bodies to implement effective strategies and policies. Their focus on community-driven solutions underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in improving road safety standards across Canada.

What are some successful community initiatives or programs that have effectively improved pedestrian safety in other regions, and how can we adapt those to our work with the Crosswalk Safety Society of Nova Scotia?
