Central Okanagan Search & Rescue Society

The Central Okanagan Search & Rescue Society, commonly known as Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR), is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to providing life-saving search and rescue services. Established in 1954, COSAR is recognized as the oldest organized search and rescue team in British Columbia.

History

COSAR's origins trace back to a pivotal event in 1954 when a young girl became separated from her family during a camping trip. The successful search effort by BC Civil Defense Volunteers highlighted the need for a formal Search and Rescue organization. In 1997, Kelowna Search and Rescue and Westbank Search and Rescue merged, forming the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue as it exists today.

Operations

COSAR operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a team of approximately 55 highly trained professional volunteers. These volunteers are skilled in various disciplines, including advanced first aid, technical rope rescue, and swift water rescue, among other search and rescue skills. The organization serves a vast area spanning from Peachland to Kalamalka Lake, Beaverdell, and Elkhart Summit, covering about 5,000 square kilometers.

Community Impact

COSAR members contribute over 20,000 hours per year to tasks, training, administration, and equipment maintenance, providing an annual savings of over $600,000 to the community through their unpaid efforts. In recent years, COSAR has been requested to respond to over 100 tasks annually, with this number expected to increase significantly.

Services and Philosophy

There is no charge for the lifesaving assistance COSAR provides, aligning with its mission to offer help without financial burden. COSAR emphasizes the importance of community service and ensures that everyone in need of rescue receives assistance, regardless of their situation. The organization is committed to excellence and relies on innovation, teamwork, and community support to ensure the safety and well-being of the region.

Recognition and Integration

COSAR is part of the broader network of British Columbia Search and Rescue teams, contributing to the efforts of 3,400 volunteers across the province. The organization is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency and is supported by donations to continue its critical work. In 2024, COSAR is celebrating its 70th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its legacy of service to the community.
