Southern Alberta Art Gallery Association
The Southern Alberta Art Gallery Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting contemporary and historical art in southern Alberta. The association operates the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG), which is located on the traditional territories of the Siksikaitsitapi, or Blackfoot Confederacy.
History
Efforts to establish a community art gallery in Lethbridge date back to 1963. However, it wasn't until 1974, when the Lethbridge Public Library relocated to a new site, that the space became available for the gallery. After renovations, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery opened its doors in January 1976. The gallery is housed in the historic former Carnegie Library building, which once served as Lethbridge's first purpose-built library from January 23, 1922, until 1974[1][4].
Mandate and Exhibitions
The SAAG is mandated to present historical and contemporary art of national and international significance to the region of southern Alberta. Over its history, the gallery has featured exhibitions by prominent Canadian artists such as John McEwen, David Bolduc, Takao Tanabe, Gathie Falk, Otto Rogers, Barbara Astman, Catherine Burgess, David Thauberger, Alan Storey, and Chris Cran[1]. This exposure often occurs early in the artists' careers, contributing to their growth and recognition.
Leadership and Programs
Allan McKay was the first director/curator of the SAAG, playing a crucial role in establishing the gallery's exhibitions and programs. After his tenure, Alf Bogusky took over until 1985, followed by Joan Stebbins, who currently serves as the director/curator[1].
In addition to its art exhibitions, the SAAG engages with the local community through various programs and events. These include art auctions, guest speakers, and educational talks aimed at promoting arts appreciation and community involvement[3][4].
Cultural Significance
Celebrating a rich history, the SAAG honored the centennial anniversary of its former library building in 2022. This milestone was marked with programs, exhibitions, and a publication that highlighted local writers, artists, and archival materials[4]. The gallery continues to serve as a cultural hub in southern Alberta, fostering an appreciation for local and international art and cultural heritage.
