The Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Museum Inc.
Overview
The Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Museum Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of pharmacy practice in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The museum is housed in Apothecary Hall, a heritage building constructed in 1922 and recognized for its architectural style, blending Art Deco and Art Nouveau elements.
Mission and Objectives
The museum's mission is to honor the healthcare heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador by sharing the history and evolution of trusted pharmacy practices. This is achieved through the display of historical pharmaceutical artifacts, educational programs, and preservation of the original building's architectural integrity.
History
Apothecary Hall was once a functioning pharmacy from 1922 to 1986. In 1988, it was converted into a museum to commemorate the province's pharmacy history. The establishment of the museum was largely facilitated by the late pharmacist James J. O'Mara, whose efforts were crucial in bringing this historical project to fruition.
Exhibits
The museum features over 1,000 items related to pharmacy practice, including mortars and pestles, scales, tablet presses, perfumes, cosmetics, and two ornate show globes from the early 1900s. The exhibits also include a wide range of historical in-house and commercial pharmaceuticals spanning more than a century.
Architecture
Apothecary Hall is notable for its preserved architectural features, such as hand-pressed tin ceilings and handcrafted oak cabinetry. The building was designated a Registered Heritage Structure by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1988.
Operations
The museum operates seasonally from May to October and offers individual and group admissions. During the off-season, visits are available by appointment only. The organization continues to contribute to the cultural and educational landscape of St. John's, Newfoundland.
Business Registration
The Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Museum Inc. is registered as a nonprofit organization with a Business Registration Number of 768787301RR0001.
