After enduring the upheavals of World War I and the Russian Revolution, Catherine and her husband emigrated to Canada, where Catherine was later received into the Catholic Church.

Inspired by a call to radical poverty and service, and with the blessing of the Bishop of Toronto, Catherine began living among and ministering to the poor, which led to the formation of Friendship House in Toronto.
