La Paroisse Catholique Romaine de Saint-Norbert is a Canadian nonprofit organization located at the confluence of the Rouge and La Salle rivers in Manitoba, Canada. The parish was canonically established on November 30, 1857, and has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century.

History

The area that became St. Norbert was initially visited by the Grey Nuns starting in 1844. In 1858, a permanent residence was established, marking the beginning of a stronger Catholic presence in the region. The Oblates of Mary Immaculate were the first priests to serve the area, with Father Lestanc being a founding figure. By 1865, the parish had grown significantly, serving nearly 1000 parishioners and covering a substantial territory.

In the late 19th century, the parish constructed several churches. The first was a log church built between 1856 and 1857. This was later replaced by a brick church constructed between 1883 and 1885, which was consecrated by Monsignor Fabre in 1887. Notably, the choir frescoes in this church were painted by Constantin Tauffenbach. However, in 1929, the brick church was destroyed by fire, leading to the construction of a new church in 1937. The interior design of this church was overseen by Father Clovis Paillé.

Notable Buildings and Institutions

1. The Chapel of Our Lady of Good Help: This chapel was built by the parish's third priest, Noël-Joseph Richot, and was blessed in 1875. It features original paintings by Constantin Tauffenbach on its ceiling.

2. L'Asile Richot (La Crèche): From 1903 to 1948, this institution served as an orphanage under the care of the Sisters of Mercy.

Cultural and Linguistic Evolution

Initially, the parish served a predominantly Métis and French-speaking population. However, over time, the demographics shifted, resulting in a majority English-speaking population.
