Nova Scotia Sea School
The Nova Scotia Sea School, officially known as the Nova Scotia Sea School Society, is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to empowering youth through transformative ocean and coastal experiences. Founded in 1994 by Crane Stookey, the organization combines traditional maritime skills with personal growth, environmental stewardship, and community building.
Mission and Objectives
The Nova Scotia Sea School aims to impart valuable life lessons such as leadership, courage, generosity, respect, teamwork, environmental stewardship, responsibility, and self-reliance. This is achieved through hands-on programs focusing on traditional boat building and seamanship, wilderness survival, and sailing. The organization provides a unique educational environment where young people, aged 12-19, can take charge of their experiences, fostering self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment.
History and Achievements
Since its inception, the Sea School has developed a distinctive approach by integrating Crane Stookey's experiences as a deck officer, his passion for Buddhist philosophy, and his commitment to working with teenagers. The organization has built over 14 wooden boats, including the iconic Sable Island Pulling Boats, DOROTHEA and ELIZABETH HALL. In 2003, Crane Stookey was honored with the Queen's Jubilee Medal for his contributions to the Canadian community through the Sea School.
Programs and Impact
The Sea School offers a diverse range of activities, including sea kayaking, wilderness and winter camping, day hikes, and sailing programs. These programs not only develop practical skills like communication and technical seamanship but also promote self-confidence, leadership, and a sense of belonging among participants. The organization has worked with over 5,000 youth, providing more than 50% of participants with bursary support to ensure inclusivity and diversity in its programs.
Cultural and Environmental Focus
Recognizing systemic barriers in the sailing community, the Nova Scotia Sea School places a strong emphasis on cultural safety and accessibility. Over the past five years, the organization has worked with a cultural facilitator to ensure that its programs are inclusive and collaborative, engaging community partners in program development. This commitment to equity and diversity has been supported by grants from organizations like Sport Nova Scotia, highlighting the Sea School's dedication to creating a culturally responsible and environmentally conscious community.
