Wilderness Youth Challenge Program
Overview
The Wilderness Youth Challenge Program (WYCP) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to helping at-risk youth develop better decision-making skills and prevent relapse into high-risk behaviors. Established in 2006 by former Youth Street Workers, WYCP uses a structured wilderness experience to enhance self-esteem and promote environmentally responsible behavior.
History
WYCP was founded by individuals with extensive experience in youth street work and wilderness risk management. The program was initiated to address the critical need for interventions that could help young people avoid returning to high-risk behaviors. The founders drew on over 20 years of combined experience to create a supportive and challenging wilderness environment.
Objectives
The primary objective of WYCP is relapse prevention among at-risk youth by fostering better decision-making skills and self-esteem through wilderness experiences. Secondary objectives include:
- Environmental Responsibility: Teaching and practicing Leave No Trace principles to promote a deep respect for nature.
- Personal Growth: Encouraging independence and self-reliance through structured solo camping experiences.
- Community Engagement: Building positive connections between youth and their communities through sponsor appreciation letters and community service projects.
Programs
WYCP offers a ten-day wilderness adventure, including four days of solo camping, targeted at youth aged 12 to 16 (though some sources extend the age range up to 18). This no-fee service focuses on building essential life skills and promoting environmentally responsible behavior. The program is conducted in various backcountry wilderness locations, establishing a base camp for participants.
Impact
WYCP provides success stories and testimonials highlighting the positive impact of the program on at-risk youth, demonstrating how such experiences can empower young people to make positive life choices and become responsible members of their communities.
Registration
The Wilderness Youth Challenge Program is registered with a Business Registration Number of 836148361RR0001, reflecting its formal recognition as a Canadian nonprofit organization.
