The North Shore Restorative Justice Society
Overview

The North Shore Restorative Justice Society is a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to promoting restorative responses to crime and conflict. It operates as a registered charity under the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), holding the business registration number 865145759RR0001.

Mission and Objectives

The Society's mission is to develop, promote, and provide restorative approaches that prevent and heal harm caused by conflict and crime. It aims to strengthen the diverse community by connecting with affected individuals, families, and organizations. The organization acknowledges the Indigenous roots of Restorative Justice and honors the Elders and Knowledge Holders, while striving to decolonize practices and prioritize solidarity with Indigenous communities.

Programs and Services

Since 1997, the Society has run the Restorative Response Program, a community-based initiative offering alternatives to the court system. This program addresses situations of crime and conflict involving youth and adults through mediation, conferencing, peacemaking circles, and shuttle mediation. These practices are rooted in the principles of restorative justice, focusing on dialogue, reparation, and healing to foster community harmony.

Community and Partnerships

The Society serves communities in Lions Bay, North Vancouver, Squamish, and West Vancouver. It collaborates with local police departments, including the NV RCMP and the West Vancouver Police Department, as well as Indigenous communities, to build trust and promote healing processes. Additionally, it recognizes historical injustices and commits to addressing systemic inequities, including anti-Black racism.

Funding and Recognition

The North Shore Restorative Justice Society is partially funded by the Ministry of Attorney General. It also supports living wage practices, having certified to pay its staff and contracted workers a living wage.

Sector and Employees

As an NGO involved in Civil Society and Social Development, the Society employs between 11 and 50 individuals, contributing significantly to community development and social justice initiatives.
