The Canadian-Scandinavian Foundation
The Canadian-Scandinavian Foundation (CSF) is a national nonprofit organization established on June 20, 1950, with the primary purpose of providing assistance and support to qualified and talented young Canadians of university age who plan to undertake a study semester or research visit in one or more of the Nordic countries, including Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
Mission and Activities
The Foundation’s mission is to facilitate educational and cultural exchanges between Canada and the Nordic countries by offering bursaries and scholarships to help defray travel and living expenses for Canadian students engaging in study or research in these countries. The CSF focuses on fostering a greater understanding of the Nordic region’s excellence in fields such as public policy and planning, technology and engineering, resource management, the arts, and sciences. Over more than six decades, the Foundation has enabled more than 300 Canadian students to benefit from Nordic academic and cultural experiences.
Scholarships and Eligibility
The Canadian-Scandinavian Foundation offers bursaries ranging from CAD $500 to CAD $2,000, distinguished between short-term and long-term study grants. Long-term grants, valued between $1,000 and $2,000, support extended study or research visits (typically a semester or more), while short-term grants of approximately $500 facilitate brief research stays. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral programs in Canada. The proposed study or research must take place in one or more of the Nordic countries.
Impact and Legacy
The CSF’s founders believed that both individual Canadians and Canadian society at large would benefit from exposure to the Nordic model in various sectors. Many scholarship recipients have leveraged their Scandinavian experiences and contacts in their subsequent professional careers, contributing to cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.
The Foundation remains committed to its original goal of fostering academic and cultural ties between Canada and the Nordic countries and continues to review applications annually to award scholarships to eligible students.
