Crossroads Theatre
Crossroads Theatre, formerly known as Shakespeare in Action, is a registered charity in Northwest Toronto, Canada. It was established over 30 years ago with a mission to expose youth to Shakespeare's works and has since expanded its vision to include a broader range of professional theatre experiences.
Mission and Values
The theatre's mission is to provide relevant and accessible professional theatre to the community while creating opportunities for growth among emerging arts workers. Its core values focus on:
- Relevance: Producing theatre that reflects the diversity of its audience, including their identities, stories, and interests.
- Accessibility: Ensuring that theatre is available to everyone, regardless of financial, physical, mental, or developmental barriers.
- Growth: Offering educational and professional opportunities for those pursuing careers in the arts.
Operations and Programs
Crossroads Theatre operates from its base in Artscape Weston Common, offering a year-round season of plays and programming. The organization also provides workshops and after-school programs for youth in the community, fostering engagement and talent development among young people.
Leadership and Team
The theatre is led by Executive Director JR Williams, who has a background in nonprofit management and a Master of Arts degree in Psychology. The leadership team includes a Board Chair, Secretary, and other members who contribute to the strategic direction of the organization.
Legacy and Community Engagement
Crossroads Theatre acknowledges the historical stewardship of the land it operates on, which has been home to Indigenous peoples such as the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, and others. The organization commits to creating spaces for marginalized voices, including Indigenous, Black, Brown, Newcomer, Youth, Queer, and other underrepresented communities, to be heard and celebrated.
