The Hnatyshyn Foundation
The Hnatyshyn Foundation (French: La Fondation Hnatyshyn) is a Canadian nonprofit charitable organization established by the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, Canada’s 24th Governor General. Registered as a federal charity (892994187RR0001), it supports emerging and mid-career artists across disciplines, including visual arts, performing arts, and music, with a focus on education, training, and career development.
History and Mission
Founded in the early 2000s, the foundation began awarding grants to performing artists in 2005. Its mission emphasizes enriching Canada’s artistic legacy by supporting gifted individuals while reflecting the nation’s linguistic and cultural diversity. Key initiatives include financial assistance, residencies, and public engagement programs to elevate awareness of private philanthropy in the arts.
Programs
Developing Artist Grants
Awarded annually to post-secondary students in classical vocal performance, jazz, and other disciplines. These grants are funded through partnerships, including the Oscar Peterson Award for emerging jazz musicians, established following a 2004 benefit concert by the Oscar Peterson Quartet. The Michailoff family also supports grants in classical vocal performance to honor their late parents’ commitment to opera.
Visual Arts Awards
Two annual prizes in visual arts:
- Outstanding Achievement as an Artist ($25,000): Recognizes mid-career artists (e.g., Stan Douglas in 2006, Ken Lum in 2007, Dana Claxton in 2019).
- Curatorial Excellence in Contemporary Art ($10,000–$15,000): Honors curators such as Louise Déry (2007) and Catherine Bédard (2019).
Emergency and Special Initiatives
In 2022, the foundation allocated over $150,000 to support Ukrainian artists displaced by conflict and Canadian artists of Ukrainian descent.
Governance
The foundation collaborates with arts professionals and institutions for jury selection. Past jurors include Scott Watson (Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery), Kitty Scott (National Gallery of Canada), and Liz Magor. Its work underscores the role of private benefactors in fostering Canada’s artistic identity.
