The Alcuin Society

The Alcuin Society is a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to the appreciation and promotion of the book arts and the wider culture of books. Founded in 1965 by Geoff Spencer in Vancouver, British Columbia, the Society is named after Alcuin of York, an influential scholar and teacher from the Carolingian Renaissance. It is a voluntary association comprising enthusiasts and professionals interested in all aspects of books, including typography, type design, calligraphy, paper making, illustration, printing, binding, as well as the history and future of books, book collecting, and libraries[1][2][3][5].

Mission and Activities

The Alcuin Society's mission is to foster a greater appreciation of beautifully produced books in Canada, promoting excellence in book design while connecting like-minded individuals who share a passion for the book arts. Areas of focus include literary authorship, publishing, book design and production, bookselling, collecting, and the various crafts involved in making books such as printing, binding, papermaking, calligraphy, and illustration[1][5].

To fulfill this mission, the Society organizes lectures and public events featuring design, typography, and publishing experts, often collaborating with universities, museums, and bibliographical societies. It also publishes Amphora, the Society's journal issued three times annually, which explores topics related to book design and production, the history of the book, libraries, ephemera, book arts, and related subjects[1][5].

Awards and Recognition

Since 1981, the Alcuin Society has hosted the Annual Award for Excellence in Book Design in Canada, the oldest and only national competition recognizing outstanding Canadian book design. Winning books are exhibited across Canada and internationally, including venues in Tokyo, Leipzig, and Frankfurt, where they compete for the Best Book Design from all over the World distinction[1][3][5].

In 2007, the Society inaugurated the Robert R. Reid Medal, named after its first recipient, to honor lifetime achievement or extraordinary contributions to the book arts in Canada. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made significant and lasting impacts on the Canadian book arts community. Notable recipients include Robert R. Reid (2007), Frank Newfeld (2009), Jim Rimmer (2010), and more recently Michael Torosian (2024)[3].

Legacy and Impact

The Alcuin Society has played a crucial role in cultivating a national awareness of book design in Canada, supporting the book arts community through its awards, publications, and events for nearly six decades. Its collections and award-winning books have been exhibited in university archives and special collections, underlining the Society's contribution to the cultural and artistic heritage of Canadian bookmaking[3].

Registered as a charity under Business Number 891428542RR0001, the Society continues to promote the finest in Canadian book design through a blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary innovation[5].
