BETH LIDA FOREST HILL SYNAGOGUE

Beth Lida Forest Hill Synagogue

Beth Lida Forest Hill Synagogue is a Canadian nonprofit organization and the oldest Orthodox synagogue in Forest Hill Village, Toronto. Established in 1912, it serves as a spiritual and community hub for Orthodox Jewish residents and visitors in the area.

History

The synagogue was founded by a group of Jewish immigrant families from the town of Lida (now in Belarus) who settled in Toronto in the early 20th century. These immigrants, part of a larger wave of Eastern European Jewish migration during that time, sought to maintain their religious and cultural traditions by establishing landsmanshaft societies and synagogues associated with their places of origin. Beth Lida, originally known as Congregation Shearith Israel Anshei Lida, was established in 1912 as a small congregation in Toronto’s working-class Jewish neighborhoods.

By the mid-1920s, the congregation had moved to a modest brick synagogue building on Augusta Avenue, characterized by windows shaped like the Tablets of the Law and adorned with Jewish stars, reflecting traditional Jewish symbolism. Over its first century, Beth Lida has grown and transitioned, adapting to the changing demographics and needs of its congregants while preserving its Orthodox heritage.

In 2012, to mark the congregation’s centenary, a detailed history was commissioned and written by Bill Gladstone, documenting the synagogue’s journey from its inception through its first 100 years of existence[1][2][5].

Location and Facilities

Currently situated at 22 Gilgorm Road in Forest Hill Village, just north of Eglinton Avenue West, Beth Lida Forest Hill Synagogue maintains a small, warm, and welcoming congregation atmosphere. The synagogue’s sanctuary accommodates approximately 150 congregants and adheres to Orthodox Jewish traditions in both design and practice.

The synagogue also includes a reception hall that can host between 50 and 80 people, frequently used for community events such as the weekly Shabbat morning Kiddush, which is noted for its hospitable and lively nature[3][4].

Community and Services

Beth Lida Forest Hill Synagogue offers regular services on Shabbat (including Friday night and Saturday morning) and major Jewish festivals. These services emphasize congregational participation and singing, fostering a vibrant and engaging community spirit.

The synagogue’s spiritual leadership is headed by Rabbi Joshua Schwartz, supported by a team of dedicated volunteers and community leaders. The leadership structure includes past presidents, secretaries, and other officers committed to sustaining the synagogue's religious and communal functions[3].

Significance

Beth Lida Forest Hill Synagogue stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Jewish immigrants in Toronto and their efforts to preserve Orthodox Jewish worship and community life over more than a century. It continues to serve not only as a place of prayer but also as a cultural and social center, maintaining its role as a cherished “little Shul on Gilgorm Road” within the Forest Hill community.
