The Community Waterfront Heritage Centre
The Community Waterfront Heritage Centre (CWHC) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the marine, rail, and industrial history of Owen Sound, Ontario. Established by a group of volunteer history enthusiasts in 1978, it officially opened to the public in 1985. The Centre operates in a historic 1932 CN Rail Station, which is the last of its kind in Ontario and is listed on the city's Heritage Register.
History and Mission
The organization's mission is to celebrate and conserve Owen Sound's rich maritime and railway heritage. It strives to educate visitors about the area's historical significance through a variety of exhibits and artifacts. The Centre officially reopened under new management on June 28, 2014.
Exhibits and Features
The museum features a diverse collection of artifacts, including scale models, archival photographs, and exquisite ship models crafted by skilled artisans. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring historical CNR and CPR memorabilia, a 1930s CNR caboose, and a 1953 CNR train car. The Centre also hosts seasonal special exhibitions to further enrich the visitor experience.
One of the notable outdoor exhibits includes the tugboat Ancaster, famous for being featured on the last Canadian one-dollar bill. Another significant artifact is the anchor and chain from the S.S. Hibou, a ship that sank off Owen Sound in 1936.
The Centre also offers a working model railroad and the historic Kennedy Foundry Whistle, which sounds daily at 12 and 5 p.m., adding to the immersive experience.
