Overview

The First Baptist Church of Vancouver is a prominent religious institution located in the heart of Vancouver, Canada. The church has a rich history dating back to its inception in a unique setting—a pub called Blair's Saloon on Abbott Street in 1886. At the time, Vancouver had just been incorporated as a city with a population of nearly 5,000 residents.

Early History

The church's origins began with a small group of Baptists who recognized the need for a place of worship in the rapidly growing city. Initially, they conducted Sunday School programs in Blair's Saloon Hall, starting on June 6, 1886. However, just a week later, the saloon and much of the city were destroyed by a fire. Following this setback, the congregation acquired two building lots from the Canadian Pacific Railway on what is now 432 Main Street. A modest church building, measuring 24 by 35 feet and costing $700, was constructed there. By March of the following year, the First Baptist Church was officially established, but it soon outgrew its first home.

Expansion and Growth

In response to the rapid growth of the congregation, a new church was built at Hamilton and Dunsmuir Streets, capable of seating about 800 people. This larger facility was dedicated on September 15, 1887. However, over time, the church's needs continued to evolve, leading to further developments.

Current Structure and Activities

The First Baptist Church of Vancouver is now housed in a beautiful stone building in downtown Vancouver, built in the Gothic Revival style. The current structure includes portions from 1911 and a 1931 addition. The church serves an extremely diverse community, comprising children, teens, and adults from various social backgrounds.
