History

The Bethany congregation began services in the 1860s and was formally organized in 1874. The church's first building was occupied in 1877, constructed for $200 on half an acre of land. Initially known as Lancaster Street Mennonite, Bethany originated from a division within the Mennonite Conference of Ontario due to language and revivalism differences. Moses Weber is recognized as the founding leader of the group.

Over its history, Bethany has undergone several denominational affiliations, reflecting its evolving identity. It joined the United Mennonite denomination in 1877, became part of the United Missionary Church in 1947, and later aligned with The Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada in 1993. The church transitioned its worship language from German to English in the 1890s. The congregation has maintained steady membership numbers over the years, with historical counts such as 141 members in 1900 and around 287 members in 1995.
