The Leprosy Mission Canada

Overview

The Leprosy Mission Canada, now known as Effect Hope, is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to combating the effects of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), particularly leprosy, globally. It is the only Canadian organization exclusively focused on this area.

History

Effect Hope, previously part of The Leprosy Mission global network, has been active for more than 130 years. Historically, The Leprosy Mission global network was founded by Wellesley Bailey in the late 19th century, but the Canadian operation has developed its own distinct identity and operational focus over time.

Mission and Activities

Effect Hope works to provide innovative solutions for the prevention, detection, and treatment of leprosy and other NTDs. It focuses on breaking down barriers to healthcare, education, social acceptance, and economic opportunities for marginalized populations, particularly in remote areas. By partnering with international organizations, Effect Hope seeks to create long-term solutions that address both physical and mental health challenges faced by these communities.

Recognition

Effect Hope has received recognition for its impact, being named one of the Top Ten Impact Charities and Top Ten International Impact Charities by Charity Intelligence Canada in 2020, 2021, and 2022. It is a member of the Canadian Centre for Christian Charities.

Rebranding

Over time, The Leprosy Mission Canada transitioned to rebrand itself as Effect Hope, reflecting its broader mission to address a range of Neglected Tropical Diseases while maintaining a strong focus on leprosy. This rebranding emphasizes the organization's commitment to creating holistic solutions for vulnerable populations worldwide.
