Ontario Municipal Management Institute

The Ontario Municipal Management Institute (OMMI) is a Canadian nonprofit organization focused on the professional development and accreditation of local government employees in Ontario. It offers a structured career recognition and advancement framework tailored specifically to municipal management professionals across the province.

Overview

OMMI administers the Certified Municipal Manager (CMM) program, which is designed to recognize the professional and academic achievements of individuals working in local government roles. Through this program, employees from front-line staff to senior managers can obtain a legally recognized credential that validates their management skills and experience within the public sector.

Certified Municipal Manager (CMM) Program

The CMM program serves as a career development system that uses an evaluative points system to capture education, seminar participation, conference workshops, and relevant work experience. The program provides a customized career development framework, offering profession-specific enhancements in partnership with over 30 local government associations throughout Ontario.

The accreditation enables municipal employees to demonstrate their breadth and depth of management capabilities beyond their primary professional qualifications. It is the only management designation available to all local government staff in Ontario, helping to strengthen administrative quality within municipalities.

Membership and Recognition

The Ontario Municipal Management Institute has accredited over 4,000 local government administrators, of which more than 800 members have earned profession-specific enhancements awarded by their respective partner associations. The membership base represents a wide range of municipal professions and supports ongoing professional growth through continuous updates and new accreditation opportunities.

Mission and Goals

OMMI aims to stimulate and recognize staff management capabilities in local government to promote career advancement and public sector success. The organization fosters professional growth by providing a recognized credential and access to comprehensive education and training tailored to municipal management.

Partnerships

The institute collaborates with various Ontario local government associations, including the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, to deliver the CMM program and related professional development initiatives. These partnerships enhance the scope and relevance of the accreditation and training offered.
