Mennonite Church British Columbia
Mennonite Church British Columbia (MCBC) is a provincial conference of Mennonite congregations in British Columbia, Canada. It serves as an organizational body for a network of Mennonite churches across the province, supporting their mission, faith, and community life within the Anabaptist tradition.
History
The roots of Mennonite Church British Columbia date back to the 1930s when several organized congregations affiliated with the General Conference Mennonite Church (GCM) gathered to form a united conference. On November 27–29, 1936, representatives from seven congregations—Greendale, Vancouver, West Abbotsford, Coghlan, Black Creek, Agassiz, and Yarrow—met at the First Mennonite Church of Sardis (later known as First Mennonite Church Greendale) to establish the Konferenz der Vereinigten Mennonitengemeinden in Britisch Columbien (Conference of United Mennonite Churches of British Columbia). The conference was established with three core purposes: to unite in the cause of Christ, to guard the Anabaptist faith, and to serve as a beacon to attract and reunite members of the faith family[1].
The conference was officially incorporated on July 22, 1940. Initial member congregations included those in Oliver, Black Creek, West Abbotsford, Mission, Coghlan, Yarrow, Sardis (Greendale), and Vancouver, with a combined membership of 405 at that time[1].
Mission and Vision
MCBC's mission centers on being a united force in Christian witness and service, fostering spiritual growth, and maintaining Anabaptist theological heritage among its member churches. It works to connect Mennonite communities in British Columbia, encouraging mutual support, theological education, and outreach[1][3].
Notable Congregations
Several congregations within MCBC have long histories and significance:
-
Black Creek Mennonite Brethren Church: Founded initially by a group planning in 1934 and officially organized by 1935, this church was among the early members affiliated with Mennonite conferences in British Columbia[5].
-
Flat Rock Mennonite Church: Dedicated its first building in 1962 and formally organized as a member congregation of MCBC in 1970[2].
Role in the Mennonite Community
MCBC acts as a regional expression of the broader Mennonite Church Canada network, linking local congregations to provincial and national Mennonite initiatives. It supports ministry, education, and community services while preserving the Anabaptist witness within British Columbia.
Summary
Mennonite Church British Columbia represents a historic and ongoing collective of Mennonite congregations committed to faithfulness in the Anabaptist tradition, unity among churches, and service within their communities. From its beginnings in the 1930s, it has grown to encompass diverse congregations dedicated to spiritual growth and outreach across British Columbia[1][3].
