Manitoba Association of Parent Councils, Inc.
The Manitoba Association of Parent Councils, Inc. (MAPC) was a nonprofit organization representing school-based parent groups across Manitoba, Canada. Established as a volunteer-led entity, it operated under the business registration number 898586466RR0001 and focused on advocating for parental involvement in education while supporting student well-being.

History

MAPC was formally recognized in 2013 by the Manitoba provincial government as the official representative of parent councils in all school divisions except the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine[1]. It served as one of Manitoba’s five major stakeholders in education, collaborating with policymakers to address issues affecting students and families[2].

Operations

The organization provided resources, workshops, and conferences to strengthen parental engagement in school governance. It also published newsletters and advocated for equal opportunities in public education, emphasizing mental health support and student safety[4]. MAPC’s activities included representation on ministerial committees and guidance on parent council constitutions[2][4].

Closure

In October 2024, MAPC announced it would cease operations after approximately 70 years of service, citing financial strains and declining volunteer engagement. Challenges included addressing complex parent concerns such as bullying, school violence, and vaping, alongside traditional fundraising support[3]. Executive Director Brenda Brazeau described the closure as a “difficult decision” by its three-member volunteer board[3].

Legacy

MAPC’s dissolution marked the end of its role as a centralized advocate for Manitoba’s parent councils. Its resources and advocacy efforts had previously supported school communities in navigating educational policy and fostering caregiver involvement[1][3].
