The Directorate of Knanaya Catholics in Canada
The Directorate of Knanaya Catholics in Canada is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of Knanaya Catholics across the country. It was established to foster spiritual growth and to provide pastoral care through the advancement of Roman Catholic religious worship, instructions, and ministry[4].
History and Background
The Knanaya community traces its origins back to a Jewish-Christian community that migrated from Southern Mesopotamia to the Malabar coast of India in AD 345. This migration was led by Thomas of Cana, often referred to as Knai Thomman, involving about 400 individuals from 72 families of seven clans, including a bishop, priests, and deacons[1]. The community maintained its endogamous nature while coexisting peacefully with other Christian communities in India.
In Canada, the Knanaya community has grown significantly, leading to the establishment of various ecclesiastic units. On February 18, 2018, a directorate was formed under the leadership of Bishop Mar Jose Kalluvelil to cater to the pastoral needs of Knanaya Catholics in the Eparchy of Mississauga. This directorate oversees ecclesiastic units in Toronto and London, with St. Mary's Knanaya Catholic Mission being elevated to a parish on the same day[1].
Organizational Structure and Activities
The Directorate is structured to support and unite Knanaya Catholic communities across Canada. It oversees the operation of several missions and churches, including Christ the King Knanaya Catholic Koodarayogam, Holy Family Knanaya Catholic Mission in Ajax, St. Pius X Knanaya Catholic Mission in Edmonton, Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Church in London, and St. Mary's Knanaya Catholic Parish in Toronto[2].
In addition to its religious functions, the Directorate collaborates with other organizations like the Knanaya Catholic Association of Canada (KCAC), which was founded to serve and unite all Knanaya Catholics in Canada[3]. The Directorate is registered as a charity under the Income Tax Act[4].
Mission and Impact
The Directorate's mission is centered on fostering spiritual growth and providing pastoral services to the Knanaya Catholic community. Through its various activities and institutions, it aims to preserve and promote the unique cultural and religious identity of the Knanaya people while integrating into Canadian society[1][4]. By supporting these communities, the Directorate plays a vital role in enhancing the spiritual and communal life of its members across Canada.
