Black Creek Community Church

Introduction

Black Creek Community Church, formerly known as Black Creek Mennonite Brethren Church, is a Canadian nonprofit organization located in Black Creek, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. It is a member of the British Columbia Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches.

History

The church has its roots in the early 1930s when the Comox Colonization Society advertised 100-acre plots of land in the area. This attracted several dozen Mennonite families, who were either recent immigrants from the Soviet Union or prairie farmers seeking a new start following the Great Depression. The area's mild climate was appealing, but land clearing proved difficult due to the remnants of logging, and the soil was less fertile than expected. Consequently, many men had to seek additional means of income, often requiring them to be away from their families. The sense of isolation from larger Mennonite communities and the consistent use of German in the early decades sometimes created barriers with non-Mennonite neighbors, leading some families to leave.

Mission and Activities

Black Creek Community Church is an evangelical, Christ-centered organization grounded in biblical teachings, with a strong emphasis on missions. The church is part of both the BC and Canadian Mennonite Brethren Conferences. It offers Sunday services, both in-house and via live streaming, as part of its community outreach.
