New Horizons Baptist Church
New Horizons Baptist Church (originally Cornwallis Street Baptist Church until 2018) is a historic Baptist church and nonprofit organization in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Established in 1832 by Black Refugees, including formerly enslaved individuals, it emerged as a cornerstone of spiritual and social advocacy for Black Nova Scotians. Affiliated with the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada and the Baptist World Alliance, the church is recognized for its community-driven initiatives and historical resilience.

History

Founded by Reverend Richard Preston, a formerly enslaved man from Virginia, the church began with 29 baptized members seeking religious autonomy and social uplift. It became a hub for organizing efforts to address systemic inequities faced by Black communities. The church survived the 1917 Halifax Explosion, serving as a temporary shelter and aid center. In 2018, it rebranded as New Horizons Baptist Church, and in 2023, its street was renamed Nora Bernard Street to honor the Mi’kmaq activist instrumental in securing compensation for residential school survivors.

Leadership and Advocacy

Reverend Rhonda Britton became the church’s first female senior pastor, serving until her retirement in 2025 after 17 years of leadership. Under her guidance, the church expanded its outreach, emphasizing youth empowerment and education through the Richard Preston Centre of Excellence, a $1.7 million provincial government-funded facility offering tutoring, mentoring, and skills training.
