Knox Metropolitan United Church
Overview
Knox Metropolitan United Church is an Affirming Ministry of the United Church of Canada, located in the heart of downtown Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. It stands as a significant spiritual and architectural landmark in the region. The church is situated on Treaty 4 Territory, acknowledging the lands of the nêhiyawak (Cree), Anihšināpēk (Saulteaux), Dakota, Lakota, Nakoda, and the homeland of the Métis/Michif Nation.
History
The church has its roots in Presbyterian and Methodist congregations dating back to worship services in both traditions in 1882. Originally, the Knox Presbyterian Church stood at the corner of 11th Avenue and Scarth Street, while the Metropolitan Methodist Church was designed by Darling and Pearson of Toronto and constructed between 1906 and 1907. The Metropolitan Methodist Church later became Metropolitan United Church in 1925 as part of the United Church of Canada. Knox Presbyterian relocated to the northeast corner of 12th Avenue and Lorne Street, eventually merging with Metropolitan United to form Knox Metropolitan United Church.
Architecture and Location
Knox Metropolitan United Church is notable for its architectural design, differing from the typical long and narrow structure of Roman Catholic and Anglican churches. Instead, it features a square layout. It is located at a prominent intersection, standing across from Victoria Park.
Mission and Affirmation
As an Affirming Ministry, Knox Metropolitan United Church welcomes people of all sexual orientations, sexes, genders, gender expressions, ages, abilities, neurodiversities, marital statuses, family configurations, races, ethnicities, religious beliefs, and economic conditions. Activities and Services
The church offers regular Sunday services, which are also streamed online. It serves as a vibrant community hub, fostering spiritual growth and social connection among its members and the broader community.
