Saanich Pioneers' Society
The Saanich Pioneers' Society is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to preserving the historical records of the Saanich Peninsula in British Columbia, Canada. The society is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency and holds a charitable registration number, which enables it to issue tax receipts for donations.
History
The society has its roots in the late 19th century, when families on the Saanich Peninsula gathered for social activities and mutual support. Over time, their interests evolved into a more formalized group, culminating in the establishment of the North and South Saanich Agricultural Fair in 1868. The modern society began to take shape around the 1920s, with a significant event being a social gathering in 1922 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. W. Richardson. This event sparked the formation of the nucleus of the Pioneer Society.
Log Cabin Museum and Archives
A key aspect of the Saanich Pioneers' Society is the Log Cabin Museum and Archives, which serves as both a historical repository and a communal space for the society's activities. The log cabin was built in 1933, primarily through volunteer labor and donations. It was officially opened on July 1, 1933. The museum is open on Saturdays during most of the year, while the archives are accessible on Mondays or by appointment.
Mission and Activities
The society's mission is centered around preserving and maintaining the history of the Saanich Peninsula. It relies on volunteer efforts and donations to operate the museum and archives. The society also hosts cultural events, such as "Talk & Teas," which are open to the public. These events help foster community engagement and promote an understanding of local history.
Legal Status
The Saanich Pioneers' Society is officially registered as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency, allowing donors to receive tax receipts for their contributions. This status also reflects the organization's commitment to transparency and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Engagement and Community
The society welcomes new members who are interested in local history and archival work. Its activities and operations depend heavily on community support and volunteerism, reflecting a strong sense of local engagement and commitment to historical preservation.
