HOSPITAL FAMILY HOUSES OF ONTARIO
The Mark Preece Family house is a refuge for families in a time of crisis.
Hospital Family Houses of Ontario
Overview Hospital Family Houses of Ontario is a Canadian nonprofit organization established to provide temporary and affordable accommodations to families from out-of-town who have loved ones being treated in a Hamilton hospital. The organization was incorporated in 2001 and achieved charitable status in 2002[1][2].
History
The organization was formed by friends and colleagues of the late Dr. Mark Preece, a physician who worked in the Intensive Care Unit at Hamilton Health Sciences until his untimely death in 1997. During his treatment, Dr. Preece's family experienced firsthand the value of supportive, affordable lodging during difficult times, inspiring the creation of the Mark Preece Family House in his honor[1].
The Mark Preece Family House
This facility serves as a "home away from home" for families in need. The project faced significant challenges, including a major arson fire in December 2008 that destroyed the building before its completion. However, with community support and determination, the house was rebuilt and officially opened on April 6, 2011. Additional rooms were added in April 2014[1].
Mission
The primary mission of Hospital Family Houses of Ontario is to offer a comfortable and caring environment for families navigating challenging healthcare situations. This commitment aligns with the vision of providing support during a period when families are often under significant stress and financial pressure.
Significance
The organization plays a vital role in the healthcare ecosystem, providing essential support services that are not always covered by the conventional healthcare system. By offering a place for families to stay close to their loved ones, Hospital Family Houses of Ontario enhances the quality of care and support available to patients and their families.
