The Pender Islands Museum Society
Overview
The Pender Islands Museum Society is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Pender Islands in British Columbia. The society operates a museum located in the historic Roesland homestead on North Pender Island, which is part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve.
Purpose and Activities
The primary purpose of the museum is to acquire, catalog, display, and preserve artifacts and archival records related to the Pender Islands. By doing so, it aims to make these historical materials available for public viewing, education, and research. The museum features exhibits and stories of the people who have lived on the islands since time immemorial, including the historical relationships and contributions of the W̱SÁNEĆ People, whose traditional territory the museum occupies.
Facilities and Exhibits
The museum is housed in a 1908 farm-resort homestead, offering a unique setting that reflects the island's history. One of its notable exhibits includes a sandstone whale carving discovered on Pender Island in the mid-1980s. This artifact is significant as it dates back to a community known for being among the earliest creators of Northwest Coast art, with roots extending approximately 5,000 years.
Operations and Funding
As a volunteer-driven organization, the Pender Islands Museum Society relies entirely on donations and community support to continue its operations. The society is recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency as a registered charity, allowing it to provide tax receipts for donations. This support is crucial for maintaining the museum's activities, including special events such as garden parties, museum tours, and sponsored lectures.
Celebrations and Milestones
In 2025, the museum marked its 20th anniversary with a year-long celebration of special events, reflecting its commitment to the preservation and celebration of island heritage.
Community Engagement
The museum's efforts not only enrich local understanding of the islands' history but also contribute to the broader cultural and educational landscape of the region. It serves as a hub for educational and cultural activities, fostering a deeper appreciation of the land's diverse history and cultural significance.
