Autism Society Ontario

The Autism Society Ontario is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families across Ontario. Founded in 1973, the organization has played a pivotal role in advancing educational, residential, and community-based services for people with autism, evolving its focus along with the growing understanding of autism as a lifelong condition.

History

The organization was originally established in 1973 as the Ontario Society for Autistic Children by a group of parents seeking to create educational and support services that were otherwise unavailable to their children. At that time, many families faced the harsh choice of institutionalizing their children due to the lack of appropriate programs. In 1974, the society was instrumental in establishing and funding the first residential and educational treatment program for adolescents with autism in Ontario, a program that later expanded to become Kerry’s Place Autism Services, providing community-based residential care for adolescents and adults with autism in central and southeastern Ontario.

In 1985, recognizing that autism is a lifelong condition, the organization changed its name to the Ontario Society for Autistic Citizens to reflect its expanded mandate to include the needs of adults with autism. In 1991, the name was changed again to Autism Society Ontario, emphasizing the importance of separating the disorder from the individual and aligning with naming conventions of national and provincial autism societies to enhance public recognition. In 2006, the organization simplified its name to Autism Ontario to promote inclusivity and improve public awareness beyond the acronym ASO.

Mission and Vision

Autism Ontario’s mission focuses on creating a supportive and inclusive environment throughout Ontario for individuals on the autism spectrum, their families, and communities. Its vision is encapsulated in the goals of facilitating the best possible lives for individuals with autism and fostering a better world through increased awareness and support.

Impact and Services

Over its 50-year history, Autism Ontario has contributed significantly to autism advocacy, research, and community service development. Initially concentrating on children, it has broadened its scope to address the needs of autistic individuals across all ages, supporting educational opportunities, residential services, and community integration. The organization also plays an active role in raising public awareness and influencing policy to improve services and supports for autistic Ontarians.

Autism Ontario remains a key stakeholder within the province’s autism community, continuing to evolve alongside advances in research and the changing needs of those it serves. Its sustained commitment since 1973 highlights its foundational role in shaping autism-related services and advocacy in Ontario.
