ROSS FERRY STEWARDSHIP SOCIETY

Ross Ferry Stewardship Society

The Ross Ferry Stewardship Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to the maintenance and development of the Ross Ferry Marine Park. Located on the scenic Bras d'Or Lake in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, the society plays a crucial role in enhancing and preserving this community asset.

Overview

Established as a volunteer-based community organization, the Ross Ferry Stewardship Society was formed with the intention of revitalizing the site of the former ferry that once operated between Ross Ferry and Big Harbour. Following the closure of the ferry with the opening of the Seal Island Bridge in 1961, the site lay unused for many years. In the early 2000s, local efforts led to the formation of the society, which negotiated an agreement with the Province of Nova Scotia to manage the site. Significant funding from governmental and private sources facilitated the transformation of the area into a vibrant marine park.

Activities and Facilities

Ross Ferry Marine Park offers a variety of amenities, including:

  • Picnic Areas: Providing scenic spots for family gatherings and outdoor activities.
  • Walking Trails: Offering opportunities for exploration and enjoyment of the natural surroundings.
  • Refurbished Wharf Facilities: Supporting boating activities and access to the Bras d'Or Lake.
  • Boat Launch: Facilitating boat access for local residents and visitors.
  • Children’s Playground: Catering to families with young children.
Funding and Support

While the society receives some funding for summer students from the federal government, the majority of its operating funds come from local fundraising efforts, donations, and grants. The organization relies heavily on community support through membership programs and donations, including its Friends of the Park initiative for larger contributions.

  • Vice Chairs: Ross MacDonald and Peter Kenyon

I work in a nonprofit and listing our organization on Eduo.org helped us reach new audiences and even new volunteers. It’s easy to use and feels built with love.
