UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

Underwater Archaeological Society of British Columbia

The Underwater Archaeological Society of British Columbia (UASBC) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to researching, locating, identifying, surveying, and protecting the maritime heritage of British Columbia. Established with a commitment to preserving historical sites, the society involves avocational archaeologists, historians, and shipwreck divers in its activities.

History and Mission

Founded in 1975, the UASBC has systematically worked to uncover and document submerged historical resources across British Columbia's coastal and interior waters. They focus on shipwrecks, aircraft wrecks, drowned towns, and other historical sites that provide insights into the region's past. The society's mission is not only to discover and document these sites but also to ensure their protection for the benefit of current and future generations of British Columbians.

Activities and Programs

The UASBC engages in several activities to achieve its mission:

  • Survey and Documentation: Once shipwrecks are located, they are thoroughly surveyed, and detailed reports are submitted to the BC Archaeology Branch. This process helps protect wrecks under the Heritage Conservation Act.
  • Training and Education: The society offers training through the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) program, aimed at developing a skilled group of divers capable of undertaking detailed surveys.
  • Public Outreach: Monthly speaker series and an annual conference titled “Shipwrecks” are organized to inform the public about maritime heritage and generate interest in these historical resources.
Impact

The UASBC's contributions to British Columbia's cultural landscape are highlighted through its documentation efforts, which are visualized in a Submerged Heritage Resources Map. This initiative not only helps in preserving historical sites but also promotes awareness among the public about the importance of non-intervention and conservation techniques to safeguard the province's maritime heritage. As one of the largest and most active heritage organizations in British Columbia, the UASBC continues to play a vital role in maritime archaeology and cultural preservation.

Business Registration

The UASBC is registered as a nonprofit organization with a Business Registration Number of 119275436RR0001, ensuring its operations align with Canadian nonprofit standards.
