Port Coquitlam Arts Council

The Port Coquitlam Arts Council (Poco Arts) is a Canadian nonprofit organization and registered charity established in 2005 with the business registration number 810599878RR0001. It was founded by members of the Port Coquitlam arts community, arts organizations, and local businesses to advocate for and nurture the growth of arts and culture in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.

History and Background

The Society was created in recognition of Port Coquitlam’s status as a growing city and the increasing importance of arts within the community. Its formation aligned with the City of Port Coquitlam’s vision to build a dedicated cultural facility downtown, known as Leigh Square Community Arts Village, to support and celebrate arts, culture, and heritage as integral components of a vibrant community. The Leigh Square Arts Village opened in 2007.

Founding members of the Port Coquitlam Arts Council played a crucial role in planning and establishing this cultural space, as well as in developing a Cultural Policy and Plan for the city. Since its inception, the Council has partnered with the City of Port Coquitlam to govern and foster arts and cultural initiatives, leveraging support from city staff, citizens, and the local business community[1][3].

Mission

The mission of the Port Coquitlam Arts Council is to enable and facilitate the growth and education of artistic and cultural opportunities for the community and to connect arts with people and businesses. It supports a wide range of programs, events, and services city-wide, working collaboratively with City staff in Arts & Culture to realize these goals[1].

Vision

The Council’s vision is to nurture the appreciation, access, and celebration of the arts in Port Coquitlam. It seeks to be recognized as a leading advocate for the arts, emphasizing that arts are a vital component in building and maintaining a strong, healthy, and attractive community[1].

Activities and Programs

The Port Coquitlam Arts Council supports the Leigh Square Community Arts Village and its community programs, including exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events. The Council also encourages membership involvement and community participation to promote and sustain arts advocacy within the city[2].

The Leigh Square Community Arts Village functions as a central hub for artistic and cultural activities, contributing to the city’s cultural life and providing spaces for both local artists and community members to engage in the arts[1].

Relationship with City of Port Coquitlam

In partnership with the City of Port Coquitlam, the Arts Council supports various public art initiatives and exhibitions hosted in venues such as the Michael Wright Art Gallery and other gallery spaces within the community. These efforts aim to broaden the reach and impact of the arts in Port Coquitlam and integrate art into community life[4][5].

In summary, the Port Coquitlam Arts Council plays a vital role in developing, promoting, and advocating for arts and culture in Port Coquitlam through community engagement, partnerships, and stewardship of key cultural venues.
